Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc., Radiation while destroying cancer cells also damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus.. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

Regular exercise which can be modified to the patients requirements is very essential during and post therapy to maintain patient strength and immunity.Simple stretching and yoga will be helpful to preserve patients organ functioning effectively post surgery and radiation.
Physiotherapy should be continued for a prescribed period of time as suggested by the therapist post surgery.

Healthy living with regular walking and maintaining adequate body weight is essential to have healthier and normal life post treatment.

Head and neck cancer patients must adapt to changes in facial structure and dysfunctions associated with breathing, eating, sensing, and movement following treatment.Reconstruction surgeries along with physiotherapy will help the patients cope up with the challenges.

Skin Care

radiation and chemotherapy introduce the additional challenge to the patients appearance when they are faced with loss of hair and dry skin.
For cancer patients, caring for skin is especially key, since treatment can leave it dry, reddened, or with a new gray or yellow cast.

Soothing face washes are recommended, and moisturizing your face twice a day can help fight dryness, soothe irritation and keep it healthy. Avoid long, hot showers or baths.Use gentle, fragrance-free soaps and laundry detergent.Use moisturizers, preferably creams or ointments rather than lotions because the thicker consistency is better at preventing skin dehydration.Apply the cream or ointment within 15 minutes of showering. Reapply moisturizer at night and moisturize your hands regularly

Some chemotherapy drugs make skin more susceptible to sunburn. Use a sunscreen with at least an SPF 30, and make sure that it

protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Hair Care During Chemotherapy

Once the chemo treatments are done the hair will grow backWith chemotherapy, hair loss is almost always temporary. But when it grows back, it may be a different color or texture. In older adults who still had hair color before chemotherapy, the new growth may be completely gray.

Nail Care During Chemotherapy

During chemotherapy, nails become brittle and dry and may develop lines and ridges. Nails can also darken with certain chemo drugs.The effects are temporary, but can last for months.Certain chemo drugs called taxanes, which are frequently used to treat breast, prostate, and lung cancer, are commonly associated with nail problems. The nail can actually separate from its bed,. To minimize the effect of taxanes on their nails and the flow of blood to their hands and feet, some patients cool their hands and feet with special cooling gloves during the infusion of the drugs.

Any nail inflammation that becomes open or produces discharge should be a warning sign. It could be infected and should be treated with antibiotics.For home care, patients with signs of infection in separated nails can soak their fingers or toes in a solution of white vinegar and water for 15 minutes every night. It kills the bacteria and dries the areas out.
